Many people come to Miami because they are tired of shoveling snow up North.

The City of Miami Beach is known around the world for fine dining and great beaches. The city has a great variety of famous resorts, restaurants, hotels and luxurious condominiums as well as plenty of waterfront homes and estates.

For so many years Miami Beach has been voted as having one of the top 10 beaches in the world, and its designation as "America's Playground" has made it appealing for celebrities, investors, and tourists as well. Miami Beach is what the northerners think of when they dream of the sunny, active South Florida lifestyle.

The beach, the great Florida weather and more make this the place to be. Located across from the beautiful Biscayne Bay from Miami, Miami Beach is an independent island city complete with local government, police and fire services, hospitals, shopping, parks, and marinas. Most of the housing stock on Miami Beach consists of expensive single family homes on the west side of the island and condominiums and apartments farther east.

The famous South Beach area is a short drive from Miami and Fort Lauderdale. This area is a section of Miami Beach that includes the southernmost 23 blocks of an island separating the Atlantic Ocean and Biscayne Bay. Today, it is a major entertainment destination with dozens of nightclubs, restaurants and oceanfront art deco style hotels. The area is popular with both American and international tourists, with German being the third most spoken language after English and Spanish. In the 1980's it was a German real estate developer who saw the great bargains on South Beach and decided to make it into an upscale area. Prior to this time believe it or not South Beach was nothing more than the place for old folks from up north to come to retire.

The large number of European tourists explains why topless sunbathing is accepted although not legal. Despite being a public beach police do not enforce the wearing of bathing suit tops. The lifeguard stands of South Beach are often seen in our postcards although they look colorful they are modern fully equipped lifeguard stations. If you take a trip to the area it is not uncommon to see celebrities at any of the local bars and restaurants.

Ocean Drive is the main road in South Beach and right on the ocean. Ocean Drive is the street you see in all the movies and TV shows that are filmed here. This area is a very popular tourist area and we get a fair amount of spring break students here. The area has been featured in shows like MTV and is a "Must See" destination for many. The funny thing is that those of us who are lucky enough to live in South Florida often forget about this diamond right here in our own backyard. Fort Lauderdale has its famous Las Olas Blvd and Hollywood Florida has the great restaurants of Harrison Street and Hollywood Blvd and in Miami you have to see Ocean Blvd.
