Ecommerce Web Design

All ecommerce web design projects begin as an CMS or Content Management System web design project.  We simply add in a shopping cart so that products can be sold online.  Sometimes people will ask us “What does a basic ecommerce website cost?” and that is a bit tricky to answer.  It is somewhat like “What does a basic house cost?” and “What does a basic car cost?”.  The video below tries to answer that question and at the same time explains many of the options that are available when you want to sell products online.

There are many features to consider in an ecommerce web design.  You may have options such as product sizes and maybe all sizes are different prices.  Bottles of perfume for example would all be priced differently based upon the size.  With some products such as t-shirts all the sizes will be the same if they are from size Small to size XLarge.  Sometimes the size XXLarge and XXXLarge may cost more.  We would build something into the back end that allows you to adjust how much extra to add for the larger sizes.

In a jewelry ecommerce web design there are many things that may alter the price of an item.  For example the ring size will make a big difference because the metals such as gold, platinum and other metals are all very expensive. The jeweler also has to deal with fluctuations in the cost of each of the already expensive metals that are used.  We would suggest building in multiple methods of controlling the cost because if there are 1,000 items then the jeweler won’t want to go and adjust the price of each one individually each time there is a price change.  We can do some custom programming that would allow the jewelry store owner to upload a spreadsheet with all the products, prices and photos.  We can setup a system where you may enter a percentage change so that if you enter +2% for gold then all gold prices on the entire website would go up by 2%.  With custom programming of a shopping cart system there is no limit to what we can do.

Rather than setup our portfolio to show pictures of our work we have videos below in which you can see several examples of custom programming and development that went into these online stores.  By watching these videos you may see some options that you would like as well.

As you can see from the videos above there are many options to consider and all of these options will have an impact upon the cost of the website. If you are looking for a Miami ecommerce web design company then maybe you are starting a new business or maybe you want to improve the business you already have. We suggest that you shop for a web development company the same way you’d shop for a doctor. We never would call around and ask doctors “What do you charge” because that isn’t as important as the care you want to receive. Miami is often called the “Scam capital of the world” so it is also important to find out about the reputation of a company and not just what they charge.

We have been one of the leading South Florida web design firms since 1995. The only way that we continue to remain in business is because we charge fair and very reasonable prices. Now that we have web design cost out of the way let’s look at the important considerations in Miami ecommerce web development.

Over the years we have had many different clients with many different needs. We have worked for clients that are in a wholesale business and all of their clients are retailers. We have also worked for retailers that want to sell to the general public.

Rather than just show pretty pictures we thought we’d point out some unique and robust programming and development functions that you may like. In the photo above you see a picture of a very different type of website.  The client manufactured a new type of boat and since it was new banks didn’t know how well the boats would hold their value after purchase. This made it impossible to place the boats at dealerships because the dealerships were not able to get floor plan financing to hold the inventory.  The manufacturer came up with a unique idea on how to market his products without going to dealerships. He just needed a web design company that could build a site that would keep track of things for him.  His idea was to use multilevel marketing to sell boats. If you bought a boat and took your friend Joe out on the boat you would give Joe a card with the website address and hull number of the boat.  Joe would go to the website and register and the manufacturer would give Joe a free cap with the company logo.  Now that Joe was registered using your hull number, if he ever decided to buy a boat for himself then you would get a $1,500.00 commission on the sale of that boat.  The website kept track of all of this and calculated commissions.

In the example above we solved a problem that is very common yet most Miami e-commerce web development firms offer no reasonable solution at all.  Typically when you buy a product from any online store you will pay a shipping charge for that product. There are many options on how this can work such as a flat fee of $5.00 shipping for each item.  Some online stores offer a range such as when you spend $1.00 to $25.00 shipping is $5.00 and when you spend $26.00 to $50 then shipping is $7.00 and it continues like that maybe to $100.00 where you’d get free shipping.  This method may encourage people to buy more because the shipping, per item gets cheaper the more they buy.  If you were buying about $75.00 worth and for just $25.00 more you could get free shipping then maybe you’d keep shopping to see what else you might like.  Another shipping method involves integrating the online store or shopping cart with either USPS, FedEx or UPS.  In that case maybe a certain item going to a certain location might cost $6.85 or so.  Any one of the options above may be the perfect solution for your business and none of the options above would work for this business.  The problem is that the products are lightweight, inexpensive and small and a person may buy more than one. The typical online store that uses USPS, FedEx or UPS will add on a new shipping charge for each item you buy.  On most online shopping sites that’s not a problem at all because the products are typically larger, heavier and more expensive so people expect the shipping costs to go up.  Here we needed a better solution because if you buy a $15.00 item with $8.00 shipping and then you want a second item which may cost $10.00 you won’t want to pay another $8.00 for shipping.  That would mean that you’ve spent $25.00 buying two items and a total of $16.00 to ship them.  This makes the shipping outrageous when compared with the cost of the products.  Our solution was to have the website’s custom designed shopping cart determine how many products would fit in a box.  We realized that all of the products were one of three sizes and they were all either small, medium or large.  We used USPS flat rate shipping to keep the cost uniform.  The website knew that if a person were to purchase any small item then a total of 10 of them would fit into one box.  It also knew that if a person purchased a medium sized item then it knew that two of those would fit in one box or one of them plus up to five of the small sized items.  We also programmed it to know that only one large sized item would fit into the box.  With that system in place people can shop and buy several items while only paying one small flat rate for shipping.

What makes the online shopping website above unique isn’t the fact that it has over 6,000 products.  It is unique and involves custom shopping cart programming to handle the unique needs of this client. What they are selling here are machines and the parts for those machines.  These machines are used in various businesses typically to clean parts before placing them back in an engine or to clean them before painting.  If your machine breaks you are out of business until you get it fixed.  They wanted a way in which people could easily locate the specific part they need for the equipment they own. To make this easy for people we setup shopping by type such as “Safety” and by the manufacturer names and by the part name and number.  Sound good right?  What about when you find which part is broken on your machine and you have no idea what that part is called and don’t have a clue as to the part number?  We built in a system where you can see an exploded view of the machine showing every part.  When you see the specific part which is broken on your machine you just click on it and it brings you right to the shopping cart where you can buy it online and checkout.
