The card had the manufacturer’s website address and the hull number of the boat.  Your friend would go to the website and register and the manufacturer would give the friend a free cap with the company logo.  As a result, that friend was registered using your hull number. Consequently, if he ever decided to buy a boat for himself then you would get a $1,500.00 commission.  The website kept track of all of this and calculated commissions.

However, none of the options above would work for this business.

The problem is that the products are lightweight, inexpensive and small. Also, a person may buy more than one. The typical online store that uses USPS, FedEx or UPS will add on a new shipping charge for each item you buy.  On most online shopping sites that’s not a problem at all because the products are typically larger, heavier and more expensive. Consequently, people expect shipping costs to go up.  In this case, we needed a better solution. The problem is that if you buy a $15.00 item with $8.00 shipping and then you want a second item which may cost $10.00 you won’t want to pay another $8.00 for shipping.  That would mean that you’ve spent $25.00 buying two items and a total of $16.00 to ship them.  This makes the shipping outrageous when compared with the cost of the products.

E-commerce Web Development

Our solution was to have the website’s custom designed shopping cart to determine how many products would fit in a box.  We realized that all of the products were one of three sizes and they were all either small, medium or large.  We used USPS flat rate shipping to keep the cost uniform.  The website knew that if a person were to purchase any small item then a total of 10 of them would fit into one box.  It also knew that if a person purchased a medium sized item then it knew that two of those would fit in one box. Additionally, one of them could fit plus up to five of the small sized items.  We also programmed it to know that only one large sized item would fit into the box.  With that system in place, people can shop and buy several items while only paying one small flat rate for shipping.

What makes the online shopping website above unique isn’t the fact that it has over 6,000 products.  It is unique and involves custom shopping cart programming to handle the unique needs of this client. What they are selling here are machines and the parts for those machines.  These machines are used in various businesses.  Typically to clean parts before placing them back in an engine or to clean them before painting.  If your machine breaks you are out of business until you get it fixed.  They wanted a way in which people could easily locate the specific part they need for the equipment they own.
